The story of Saul's dramatic conversion on the road from Jerusalem to Damascus, in which he saw a blinding vision of the recently crucified Christ, is the most commonly known fact about the man who became St Paul.
It turned him into the new faith's most zealous missionary. In the decades that followed he traveled tens of thousands of mile around the Mediterranean spreading the word, surviving shipwrecks, riots, imprisonment, jailbreaks, floggings and stonings.
The letters he wrote to the infant Christian communities in the region are the earliest Christian documents in existence.
