The 12 sons of Jacob (Israel) were: Asher, Benjamin, Dan, Gad, Issachar, Joseph, Judah, Levi, Naphtali, Reuben, Simeon, and Zebulun and they were the ancestors of the original twelve tribes. Each occupied a separate territory, except the tribe of Levi, which was set apart to serve in the Holy Temple.
