The beagle is one of the oldest breeds in history, and the closest breed to the original hound. This breed of dog was bred primarily for rabbit hunting, but they also hunt everything they can sniff, even pheasant.
The beagle came to be popular during the time of King Henry VIII of England. Their popularity was increased further with his daughter's reign, Elizabeth I, when the royalty used to go out into hunting parties and attached these dogs to the saddles of their horses. Their name came from the Celtic word "beag" which means small, or the French word for gape throat "bgueule."
