Did you know that walnut tress are allelopathic? That means they, like many other plants, secrete into their environment biochemical materials that inhibit the growth of other plants.
In the case of the walnut the substance is called hydrojuglone, a chemical that is non-toxic and colorless until it is exposed to air. Once oxidized it is quite poisonous to many other plants and helps the Walnut reduce the competition around it. Quite a survival mechanism, huh?
