The Huguenot movement began to take shape in 1517 with the publication of Martin Luther's 95 theses against corruption in the Roman Catholic Church - the only official Christian church in Europe at the time. His supporters became known as Protestants.
The Huguenot cross originated in France and is one of the more recognizable and popular symbols of the evangelical reformed faith and is believed to have been a sign of recognition among the French Protestants as early as the 17th century.
