Borromean rings have been commonly used as a symbol of the Trinity since at least the 13
th century. This design is a variation of a design found in a manuscript in the Municipal Library at Chartres.
This design contains the phrases "Trinitas Unitate" (three in one) and "Unitas Trinitate" (one in three).
