Advent, Latin for "to come to", is a time of preparation for Christians. It is the four Sundays before Christmas and is a time for preparation to celebrate the first coming of Jesus and prepare for his second coming.
Traditionally the season leading up to Christmas is marked by lighting candles in an Advent wreath: One candle the first week, two the second week, and so on.
The candles are usually purple or blue, representing penitence, except for the third week's candle. It represents Joy and is usually pink.
