Arab poets have often called the camel the "ship of the desert." Long ago, Saydah Dhu alRumma said that his she-camel was a "safiinat al-barr" or land ship.
Today, there are two main types of camels, the two-humped camel known as the Bactrian (Camelus bactrianus) and the Arabian one-humped camel known as the dromedary (Camelus dromedarius). The dromedary lives only in North Africa and Arabia.
