Atop the ark was the mercy seat. The mercy seat was made of pure gold (Exodus 25:17). Upon it would be sprinkled the blood of the Lamb by the High Priest (Leviticus 16:14), once a year, in order to redeem Israel of its sins.
When our Lord manifested Himself within the Holy of Holies, it was above the mercy seat (Leviticus 16:2), much like a king sitting upon His throne.
