IHS Monogram

IHS is an ancient monogram (or letter symbol) for Jesus that dates back to the first century. It is an abbreviation derived from the first three letters (iota = i + eta = h + sigma = s) of the Greek word "Jesus."
Scribes of that time period wrote a line or a bar over the letters to indicate an abbreviation.
